Hard Hearts, Soft Hearts, and Deceived Hearts: Holding Fast in a World of Counterfeits
The scriptures often speak of two kinds of hearts: hard hearts and soft hearts. A hard heart rebels against God. A soft heart is humble, teachable, and willing to obey.
Yet there is a third heart we must also understand: the deceived heart.
The Battle for the Heart
Both our Heavenly Father and Satan understand the power of the human heart.
God seeks to soften hearts, bringing His children to repentance and alignment with His will. Satan seeks to harden hearts or deceive soft hearts through subtle counterfeits and falsehoods.
Doctrine and Covenants 50 warns:
“Behold, verily I say unto you, that there are many spirits which are false spirits, which have gone forth in the earth, deceiving the world; and also Satan hath sought to deceive you, that he might overthrow you.” (D&C 50:2–3)
Satan is the father of lies—the great deceiver. His mission is to disrupt God’s plan of salvation. He rarely does this through obvious evil. Instead, he disguises evil as good and good as evil. He uses emotional appeals, half-truths, and counterfeit versions of eternal principles.
Elder Larry R. Lawrence taught:
“Counterfeits are not the same as opposites… Counterfeits bear a resemblance to the real thing in order to deceive unsuspecting people.”
There is no spiritual middle ground. There is no safe gray area between good and evil. Our choices either draw us closer to God or farther away from Him.
Hearts Failing in the Last Days
The scriptures teach that in the last days, men’s hearts will fail them.
“Men’s hearts shall fail them.” (D&C 45:26)
“Men’s hearts shall fail them; for fear shall come upon all people.” (D&C 88:91)
These prophecies describe more than fear. They describe confusion, spiritual instability, and moral uncertainty.
The adversary is attacking truth itself. He attacks the family, identity, marriage, morality, and faith. Often, he does so through messages that appeal to compassion while quietly separating compassion from truth.
The love of the world teaches that truth is determined by personal preference. Christlike love teaches that truth is eternal and comes from God.
President Russell M. Nelson described worldly thinking as “myopic”—short-sighted and focused only on the present. Satan would have us exchange eternal joy for temporary satisfaction.
Lehi’s Dream and the Danger of Deception
Lehi’s vision provides one of the clearest lessons about soft hearts, hard hearts, and deception.
After partaking of the fruit of the tree, Lehi testified:
“It filled my soul with exceedingly great joy.” (1 Nephi 8:12)
What happened next is significant.
Lehi stayed at the tree.
When mocked by those in the great and spacious building, he did not abandon what he knew to be true. He remained firm and beckoned his family to come and partake.
Sariah, Sam, and Nephi responded. Laman and Lemuel did not.
No matter how much it must have hurt, Lehi stayed at the tree.
In many ways, this mirrors our Father in Heaven, who remained true to His plan even as a third of His children rebelled and chose another path.
The lesson for us is clear:
Stay at the tree.
Remain faithful.
Continue beckoning.
Love without compromising truth.
Clinging Versus Holding Fast
Lehi’s dream teaches an important distinction.
Some people merely clung to the rod of iron. They reached the tree and tasted the fruit, but when the world mocked them, they became ashamed and fell away.
Others held fast.
They pressed forward continually and remained faithful despite opposition.
Nephi explained:
“The rod of iron… was the word of God.” (1 Nephi 15:23–24)
The rod represents the scriptures and the words of God’s prophets.
The most important prophet is the living prophet.
In times of confusion, we do as Nephi did: follow prophetic counsel, seek personal revelation, and trust the Lord.
Elder Jeffrey R. Holland taught:
“Hold fast to what you already know and stand strong until additional knowledge comes.”
Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf similarly counseled:
“And yes, you will find imperfections… but don’t leave the boat.”
Building Upon the Rock of Christ
The Savior teaches us not merely to hold to the rod but to build upon a sure foundation.
Helaman taught:
“It is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ… that ye must build your foundation… a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall.” (Helaman 5:12)
This truth is taught even in the Primary song, The Wise Man and the Foolish Man.
The wise man built upon the rock.
The foolish man built upon the sand.
What is the sand?
It is the arm of flesh.
It is a trust in the philosophies of men over the word of God.
It is deception, half-truths, counterfeit doctrines, and worldly ideologies that shift with culture and public opinion.
Nephi declared:
“I will not put my trust in the arm of flesh.” (2 Nephi 4:34)
The storms of life will come. The question is whether our foundation is built upon Christ or upon the changing opinions of the world.
Counterfeits in Our Day
One of Satan’s most effective tools is the counterfeit.
Counterfeit religion teaches that organized religion is unnecessary while dismissing the divinely established Church founded upon apostles and prophets (Ephesians 2:19–20).
Counterfeit identity rejects God’s eternal declaration that each person is a beloved son or daughter of heavenly parents with divine purpose and destiny.
Counterfeit marriage redefines what God has ordained between a man and a woman.
Counterfeit success elevates wealth, status, career, and self-fulfillment above faith, family, and discipleship.
Counterfeit relationships normalize conduct contrary to the law of chastity.
Counterfeit lifestyles glorify behaviors that diminish our ability to honor our bodies as temples of God.
These counterfeits often resemble the truth closely enough to deceive sincere people.
The danger is not always open rebellion.
Often, it is a gradual compromise.
Separating Sin from the Sinner
Alma taught that:
“The Lord cannot look upon sin with the least degree of allowance.”
To understand this principle, we must separate sin from the sinner.
When the woman taken in adultery was brought before Christ, He showed mercy, compassion, and understanding.
Yet His final instruction was:
“Go, and sin no more.”
He loved her completely.
He did not condone the sin.
Likewise, we are called to love all of God’s children while remaining faithful to God’s commandments.
Charity is not the abandonment of truth.
Charity is helping others come unto Christ and receive the healing power of His Atonement.
God’s Law and Man’s Law
One of Satan’s most subtle deceptions is encouraging people to confuse human law with divine law.
The Lord declared:
“I am… the same today as yesterday, and forever.” (D&C 35:1)
And:
“Whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same.” (D&C 1:38)
Doctrine and Covenants 134 teaches that human laws govern relationships between people, while divine laws govern our relationship with God.
Human laws may change.
God’s laws do not.
Elder Boyd K. Packer illustrated this truth through a story about children trying to determine whether a kitten was male or female. One child suggested:
“We can vote on it!”
Elder Packer concluded:
“Some things cannot be changed. Doctrine cannot be changed.”
Truth is not established by popular opinion.
Truth is established by God.
Receiving the Right Message
President James E. Faust compared spiritual communication to cellular signals.
Just as physical obstacles can interfere with phone reception, spiritual obstacles can interfere with revelation.
Anger.
Transgression.
Selfishness.
Pornography.
Worldliness.
These can create spiritual dead spots that prevent us from hearing the voice of the Spirit.
President Faust taught that we must carefully evaluate both the source and motivation behind the messages we receive.
Alma provides the test:
“Whatsoever is good cometh from God, and whatsoever is evil cometh from the devil.” (Alma 5:40)
Paul added:
“Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.” (1 Thessalonians 5:21)
Stay at the Tree
The voices of the world are becoming louder.
The great and spacious building continues to mock faith, covenants, prophets, and discipleship.
But the invitation remains the same.
Hold fast to the rod.
Build upon the Rock of Christ.
Stay at the tree.
Do not let your heart be hardened.
Do not let your soft heart be deceived.
Turn away from Satan’s counterfeits and toward Jesus Christ.
Honor your covenants.
Follow living prophets and apostles.
Live worthy of the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost.
As President Russell M. Nelson warned, in the coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting, and constant influence of the Holy Ghost.
If we stay anchored in Christ, He will help us discern truth from error, fill us with everlasting joy, and lead us safely through the storms of mortality to eternal life.
The invitation is simple:
Stay at the tree.
Hold fast to the rod.
Build upon the Rock.
And do not let your heart be deceived.
